Haitian-American Christine Souffrant grew up in Port au Prince where her family sold goods and wares on carts and in flea markets. When her mother moved to New York, she couldn’t get a job so she did what she knew best: she spread a blanket in Christopher Circle and sold Haitian street art. Christine, the first member of her family born in the United States, has set out to digitize the street market with her smart phone app, Vendety. She was recently named one of Forbes “2016 30 Under 30” entrepreneurs for the app that street vendors can use to digitize their commerce. It’s been called the Yelp for street vendors and it’s connecting local artisans with consumers, the world over. What’s more, it offers street vendors and local artisans the opportunity to bring new sources of revenue into their communities.
