John Wooden
Basketball player and legendary coach, “The Wizard of Westwood,” John Wooden’s parents lost their family farm during the Great Depression. Wooden excelled at basketball when professional sports were not the lottery ticket they are today. Athletes had to work to support themselves in the off-season and Wooden was a good coach. After a few years in the NBA, he turned to coaching high school basketball full time. Eventually, he was hired by a then-unknown program at UCLA. He built the Bruins into a college basketball empire with 10 championships. Wooden was well-loved for his ability to inspire and encourage players, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton, with simple gems of wisdom that applied to life on the court and off, including his "Pyramid of Success." Among Wooden's maxims: “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail,” (Benjamin Franklin), “Flexibility is the key to stability,” “Be quick, but don't hurry,” and “Seek opportunities to show you care. The smallest gestures often make the biggest difference.”
