Born to a single, teenage mother in Mississippi, Oprah Winfrey ran away from home, abuse and poverty at age 13. She gave birth to a child who died as an infant at age 14. When she finally came to live with her father, he gave her some structure and she excelled at school. By 17, she won a beauty pageant, won a scholarship to school, and began her broadcasting career while attending college. Today, Oprah is one of the most recognized personalities in entertainment with an Academy Award and her own network and publishing empire, appropriately called OWN. She’s worth $3.1 billion dollars.
