Chris Gardner, whose story is featured in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, landed an entry-level job in a stock brokerage firm. At the time, he was a single father and wasn’t making enough money at the job to support himself and his son. The two struggled secretly with homelessness for over a year, sleeping wherever they could find safety in and around the rough Tenderloin area in San Francisco. Gardner finally convinced priest to put them up in a women’s shelter as he persevered with his career. Now, Gardner has his own stock brokerage firm and is a well-known philanthropist. He’s estimated to be worth $60 million.
